Motown Sugar Brown

Who is Motown Sugar Brown?

He’s from Detroit, and has chosen to stay in the place he’s always called home.  It’s dirty, it’s downtrodden, it’s not perfect, it’s the wheel so squeaky no one listens to it anymore.  But it’s home to three quarters of a million people in the city itself, not to mention the millions living outside its immediate borders.  One side doesn’t talk to the other because there’s no way to easily move from west to east or north to south.  Beautiful in a broken kind of way, Detroit is a mosaic of wealth, color and, most importantly, music.

The music is really what keeps the heart of this region whole.  Even as the jobs scurry away, even as the infrastructure continues to choke on its own collapsing framework, even as the black skies grow blacker and the winds get drier and the buildings fall into rubble, the music keeps unity and faith in tomorrow.  The urgency of the melody, the hallowed backbeat, the breathy vocals and the soaring guitars, the keyboards in lock step with each and every hope in the city - the music is what will save Detroit for good.

Motown Sugar Brown is the self-proclaimed Godfather of Detroit.  He’s the glitter on the sidewalk, the graffiti on the wall, the lamplight on Woodward Avenue.  Motown Sugar Brown knows what Detroit’s capable of bringing forth, and he will be there, good or bad, to make it happen.  He believes in the diamonds locked in the carbon exhaust of every car speeding on to other places.  One day they’re going to stop.  And when they see the good that remains, one day they’re going to stay.  Motown Sugar Brown knows that Detroit will come back.  In the meantime, he will make his joyous sound and keep his audiences on their feet.  Whether it’s dancing or loving or philosophizing on their minds, Motown Sugar Brown brings everything he’s got to the front lines, those who really want to see Detroit revitalized.
